Nowadays it is common to begin rock climbing on artificial climbing
walls, and there are many regular climbers who rarely or never venture
onto natural crags. The accessibility, the relatively defined nature
and the less serious atmosphere often mean that such facilities are
ideal for beginners and are popular places to introduce others to climbing.
Artificial walls can allow a high level of performance to be developed,
and both indoor and outdoor venues are now available for novices, not
only to start climbing, but also to participate, train and climb throughout
The number of organised groups enjoying rock climbing and abseiling
on artificial climbing walls has risen over many years. Mountain Leader
Training (MLTUK and the home nation Training Boards: MLTE, MLTNI, MLTS
and MLTW) is concerned to ensure that high standards of supervision
are maintained, so that both enjoyment and safety are enhanced without
compromising either the sport or the participation of others. High
standards are achieved through experience, personal qualities, training
At climbmts we provide CWA training and assessment courses over a 2
consecutive day period.
This award offers candidates and award holders the opportunity to access
an abseil module for use indoors and on outdoor artificial structures.
The abseil training module is normally completed during the CWA training
course. Additionally, a teaching lead module is available to those
wishing to teach indoor lead climbing. Teaching lead climbing courses
can only be attended once the CWA award has been successfully passed.
Main topics of training the CWA training course will provide:
groups accessing the top of walls

Following a training course, candidates will enter a consolidation
period where they gain further experience in personal climbing at indoor
venues and attain experience assisting and supervising groups in a
mixture of indoor climbing venues.
At climbmts the assessment phase is delivered over 1 day. Tailor-made
course dates are available for private group bookings.
The assessed technical topics are as above.
The training course alone is not a qualification. This award is competence
based, therefore an assessment phase is required to pass and attain
certification / qualification for the Climbing Wall Award.
This course is based at two indoor climbing venues. Specific
training venues are confirmed at point of booking, as some of our venues
will change depending on the size of our course, which may have either
6 or 12 participants.
To book a training or assessment course for the CWA you must first
register with your home nation board.
